Funding
Care funding starts with the right assessment route
Care funding in England can involve a care needs assessment, a financial assessment, NHS routes, benefits and private payment.
The order matters. Guessing the funding route before needs are assessed can waste time and create false expectations.
This page explains the main routes and the limits of general online guidance.

The main routes
- A local authority care needs assessment to understand eligible care and support needs.
- A financial assessment to work out what the person may contribute toward eligible support.
- NHS routes where health needs are central, including NHS-funded nursing care in eligible nursing home cases.
- Benefits that may help with disability or caring responsibilities.
- Private payment where the person pays some or all costs directly.
Avoid asset avoidance advice
Do not rely on advice that suggests hiding assets, transferring property or arranging finances mainly to avoid care charges. That can create serious legal and financial problems.
If property, trusts, powers of attorney, debt or large savings are involved, speak to an appropriate qualified adviser.
